THE RIVERS ANGELS GIVE BACK INITIATIVE
Part of the goals of the creative hub, as a community development and enterprise centre, is the conscious, intentional investment in human resources, talents, and all round community development – without bias. As part of this goal, several projects (creative and entrepreneurial) are hosted by the hub monthly bringing together groups of people, mentors, teachers, instructors and renowned industry experts in a bid to improve lives.
More recently, the commitment to reaching out and giving back to society and areas where lapses are noticed pushed our convener, Ibinabo Amakiri to embark on the “RIVERS ANGELS PROJECT”
While observing the female football train at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium during her personal workout, she pondered on what provisions were being put in place for these females as their fall back after the end of their football careers.
Based on further interactions with the team, she resolved to organize a five (5) days skills acquisition program, with the intention to provide them with entrepreneurial skills that will be useful as an added source of income while they are on the team and also for when they retire given that an average footballer’s career is flanked by many uncertainties.
This initiative was welcomed warmly as it saw a lot of the team members avail themselves to the trainings provided.
Day 1 of the training was the FASCINATOR TRAINING – Members of the team were taught how to make various fascinators suitable for trending fashion styles.
DAY 2 – SMALL CHOPS TRAINING – The Team learnt to make Samosa, Chicken and vegetable spring rolls and puff puff during this class.
DAY 3 – MOCKTAILS & COCKTAILS – The art of mixology was taught during this class which entailed learning how to make fresh fruit juices, smoothies, mocktails and cocktails
DAY 4 – BAG MAKING TRAINING – Members of the team were taught how to make amazing Ankara fabric bags.
DAY 5 – BAKING – The final class had all hands dipped in flour as they participated in the day’s lessons to bake various types of cakes, meat pie, fish roll and doughnut.
All of the financing for the project was done from personal funds and help from friends of the convener.
From observations and interactions with members of the team during Phase one (1) of the project, and the reaction, focus and enthusiasm of the girls displayed throughout their training, it was clear that a more comprehensive, thorough and in-depth training not only in these areas already covered, but also in other relevant vocational spheres is needed and will further equip the girls with necessary skills to empower them.
There is a need to improve on what we have done so far by ensuring that this time materials will be made available for each participant to work and do hands on practice alongside the instructor as teaching is going on during and after each class.
Hence the need to run the second phase of our GIVE BACK INITIATIVE – SKILLS ACQUISITION PROJECT
We also wish to extend this training program to other Rivers State Female Sports teams (Basketball, Cycling, Athletes, Martial arts, etc.)
The second phase of this project would include numerous soft skills
Participants would be asked to choose any two areas of interest from the various classes provided and the entire project is earmarked to run for one month. Investing in human and capital investment is the best any government, individual or institution can do as it is the only sure investment to grow exponentially with time. For the next phase of this project and more, we’ll in need of sponsors and donations to see that the projects comes to fruition and that’s where you come in. We propose that you kindly fund this phase of the project as well as partner with us on all other give back projects which The Creative Hub embarks on.
